Working to Glorify God

I am constantly asked what I do at Heritage. A lot of times, I either say “oh, I do whatever they need me to do” or something along the lines of “it's like running a hotel”. It’s really hard to explain what we do as MSAs because there’s so much, but also so little at the same time. We perform a variety of mundane tasks, such as cleaning, restocking, preparing meals, and simply being young witnesses to the faith for guests. If I’m being honest, I sometimes struggle to enjoy things like this. On hot summer days, the last thing I want to do is walk around the property and wipe bird poop off the benches. During the spring, when the pollen is a nightmare, the last thing I want to do is blow the cottage porches to clean them off. After a big group finishes their meal, the last thing I want to do is scrub pots and pans. So many times, I find myself complaining about this “mundane” work. Complaining about the heat, the bugs, being dirty, etc., but then I have to remind myself why I'm doing this. I’m doing this to glorify God. I’m making Heritage beautiful and clean so that when someone visits, they can get the full Heritage experience and grow closer to God. I’m doing this so that when someone visits, the last thing they need to worry about is sitting on a dirty bench. I’m doing this so that when someone visits, they don't have to worry about their cottage running out of coffee or toilet paper. I’m doing this so that when someone visits, they can be moved by the Lord without any other distractions around them. You may be saying, “Olivia, that's easy since you work in a job surrounded by faith.” Well, I want to remind you that you can do this, too. Wherever you are in life right now, God has gotten you there. Whether you’re working at your dream job, trying to find a new one, staying home with the kids, or maybe you’re unemployed at the moment, remember God’s will for you is to glorify Him. Say a prayer for the person you see struggling in the drive-through. Thank God each time you make a sale, settle a loan, or have a student pass a test. Frustrated at the kids? Offer it up for those in need. Currently looking for a job? Thank God for the opportunity to apply and interview for each company, and trust that He will send you exactly where you’re meant to be. I know this is difficult at times. It’s so easy to get caught up in the negative, but trust me when I say life will be so much more joyous when you start living for God rather than for yourself.
